How NOx Sensors Work in SCR Aftertreatment Systems

NOx sensors are a core feedback element of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) aftertreatment systems on modern diesel engines, helping fleets meet Euro 6/7, EPA and CARB emission regulations.

Sensor construction

A VexoTECH NOx sensor consists of a high-temperature ceramic probe and an electronic control unit (controller), connected by a cable. The probe is mounted in the exhaust stream, while the controller is positioned in a cooler zone of the vehicle.

Measurement principle

The ceramic probe converts nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust gas into electrical signals. The controller processes these signals using proprietary algorithms and transmits the results digitally via CAN-based protocols (e.g., J1939), supporting emissions monitoring and closed-loop SCR control.

Key requirements

NOx sensors must survive extreme temperatures, vibration and contamination while delivering fast response and high accuracy across the full measurement range — capabilities built into every VexoTECH sensor through in-house HTCC ceramic chip technology and rigorous validation.
